FAQ

1. What is an ocular prosthesis ?

An ocular prosthesis is a synthetic resin medical device (just like a dental crown) that is placed to fill the void left by a missing, traumatized or atrophied eye.

Each ocular prosthesis, by its colors, its shape and its volume, is unique. Unless there is a specific problem or in the case of a temporary prosthesis, the prosthesis is made from the molding of the orbital cavity.

It is placed on the tissues covering the remaining globe or the implant and it is held by the eyelids.

2. Why an ocular prosthesis ?

In addition to its aesthetic role, an ocular prosthesis is essential for the maintenance of the orbital cavity.

Indeed, it allows to preserve the volume and, moreover, it preserves the conjunctival dead ends which are essential for the circulation of tears and the holding of the prosthesis.

It is therefore important to wear it at all times (except, when it is prescribed, withdrawal at night is possible).

Also, in case of discomfort or loss, you must contact us urgently so that you can again be able to wear an ocular prosthesis, even temporary.

Know that if you did not wear anything in the cavity, in a few months, it would atrophy, just like the muscles of the eyelids, which would make any re-equipment impossible without further surgery, the result of which is by no means guaranteed.

3. How is the fitting carried out ?

The realization of your ocular prosthesis requires at least 3 appointments:

- The 1 st lasts about 1 hour for taking measurements: it includes the selection of a standard preform which is used for molding the cavity, the recording of dimensions and iriènne and scleral shades (white of the eye), of the vascularization of the sclera and an administrative part relating to the treatment file.

- The 2 nd meeting lasts between 1 and 2 hours for the adjustment:

(between these 2 appointments, we make here the personalized preform which includes the molded part)

During this meeting, we proceed to its adjustment and therefore to successive alterations. Finally, we check the iris which was manufactured by the DENCOTT laboratory. If everything is correct, we start manufacturing the ocular prosthesis, otherwise new appointments may be necessary before the final order.

- The last appointment for delivery lasts ½ hour: any final alterations can be made on site. In some cases, we perform a temporary prosthesis at one time, which is worn between 2 and 4 months before the final fitting.

4. What result to expect ?

The result will depend on the trauma suffered by the patient. Each case is different, the ocularist endeavors to restore a natural aspect to the gaze, taking into account the volume of the orbit, the residual mobility of the eye and the opening of the eyelids.

5. Should you remove it ?

In the majority of cases, no. Unless otherwise indicated, it is not recommended to remove the prosthesis, any manipulation triggers an excess flow of secretion. However, if it's needed overnight or for a specific reason, we'll show you how to take it out and put it back.

6. What maintenance ?

Daily cleaning should be limited to surface rinsing with eye solution and a compress.

In some cases, you will have to remove the prosthesis overnight and store it in a decontamination solution, the ocularist will be able to advise you. It is recommended to repolish your ocular prosthesis every year to ensure better comfort.

7. What follow-up ?

There is a first check after a month of wearing then, after this period of habituation, we advise you to also visit your ophthalmologist. Finally, an annual check-up is essential, with your ophthalmologist and with us for repolishing.

8. What renewal ?

The lifespan of an ocular prosthesis is at least 6 years, except for children where the change is made according to their growth and therefore on the advice of their ophthalmologist. If there is a change in the cavity, the prosthesis must be redone.

9. What to do in case of discomfort?

You must contact us or call your ophthalmologist. Indeed, we are able to analyze and resolve your discomfort quickly.
